Global Peace Index 2018
The Global Peace Index 2018 was released on 6 June 2018 by the Institute for Economics & Peace. New Zealand again places second behind Iceland. Iceland scored 1.096 with New Zealand trailing marginally behind by 0.096 with a score of 1.192. Our closest neighbour Australia comes in at 13th with a score of 1.435. The top 13 countries all score the top grade of "Very High" for the State of Peace.
Why is this important? Frequently in New Zealand media we are bombarded with news from around the world, including the US, and some of these stories take a particular hold in the headlines. Firearms incidents in the United States is one example where media often seek to leverage the gun control debate with the New Zealand public. Often the context is lost, and this is a real problem in the debate.
